The Cottages
Hawthorn
The living area in Hawthorn.
This two-storey barn may have been originally a combination of dwelling on the first floor with animals housed below. The main walls are at least 2' thick. The mature timber used inside is from an old barn that had collapsed.
The wide staircase is one of two that were in the main house. This leads to a double bedroom with bathroom off.
There is a bath with shower over it. The room rises into the pitch and the main timbers and 'A' frames are exposed. Wardrobes and a cupboard lining one wall are constructed from the barn timbers.
Opposite is an unusual twin bedded room with extra long 3' beds with wooden slats. The room is high with the timbers and 'A' frames exposed.
A ladder (which may be removed to prevent young children gaining access) is used to reach a single bed on a gallery. This bed may be used by older children or agile adults!
This room also has its own bathroom again with shower over the bath.
Downstairs, the farmhouse style beamed kitchen has a floor of handmade terracotta tiles, period glass fronted china cabinet, pine table and modern facilities. There is a four ring gas cooker.
The living room opposite with beamed ceiling and some exposed stone walls has a three piece suite set around a coal fire. There is a television, dvd/cd player and video. A window and door open onto the patio with tables and chairs for enjoying the summer evenings.
