Scotchcoulthard Farm & Self-Catering Holiday cottages

Scotchcoulthard is ideal for holiday accommodation to enjoy the dark skies of Northumberland.
The International Dark Sky Association (IDA) is the leading international organisation combating light pollution worldwide. The IDA awards the designations of 'Dark Sky Reserve' to those wild and remote places that demonstrate an ability to conserve the dark skies above them and are committed to providing opportunities for the public to enjoy them.

Cawfields Quarry

Northumberland National Park Authority, Kielder Water & Forest Park Development Trust and Kielder Observatory Astronomical Society were awarded the title of Northumberland Dark Sky Park in December 2013. This means nearly 1500 square kilometres of Northumberland has been designated an area to conserve and enjoy, making Northumberland, Europe's largest Dark Sky Park.

The pictures below are taken at Cawfields Dark Sky Discovery Site situated a few miles away on Hadrian's Wall. For other local night photos please got to Visit Northumberland.

For more information visit The Dark Sky Project or Newcastle Astronomical Society.

A site recommended to look at is Heavens Above. They have an app that can be downloaded.

Scotchcoulthard Star Gazing

At Scotchcoulthard we have used a light meter to get  readings of over 21.5 which is the amount used to determine a dark sky status.

If you wish to star gaze there are binoculars, camp chairs, blankets and flasks you can borrow.

A monthly star chart can be printed out so you can recognise the stars. There are work sheets and booklets for the children.
